Wedding Tips

Wedding Traditions Aren’t Necessary

There are so many personal touches, unique ideas, and events I see at weddings. I love it! Also, there are lots of “To-Do’s” or wedding traditions that many of couples feel they have to do. I’m here to tell you – you don’t!

Here are some of the main traditions that I no longer see as much or in unique ways:

WEDDING TRADITIONS | NO. 1

Bouquet and Garter Toss

Everyone always feels awkward during these, and as a videographer, I rarely include the garter toss. Sometimes, I will include a bouquet toss. Consider ditching this wedding tradition.

WEDDING TRADITIONS | NO. 2

Cutting The Cake

This is one of those wedding traditions that still happens frequently. I’ve seen “private cake cutting” which just essentially means that it won’t be announced. You’ll still get photos with you cutting it on the cake table. Then it’s cut and served. If you have a dessert table and no cake, you don’t have to do it!

WEDDING TRADITIONS | NO. 3

Parent Dances

This one falls in the “unique” category as 99% of the weddings I work for still have parent dances. One of my favorite ways I’ve seen this done is dancing at the same time your spouse is dancing with their parent. Not everyone has the best relationship with their parents, or their parent could feel awkward being the center of attention. Dancing at the same time helps.

WEDDING TRADITIONS | NO. 4

Receiving Line

I almost only see these if the ceremony is at a church. It is a great way to see everyone and say hello, but it does take up a lot of time, so plan accordingly! An alternative to this is adding in 20 minutes after you eat dinner to go around the reception while everyone finishes dinner to say hello!

The Bottom Line

When it comes to planning your wedding, do what makes you happy.

When it comes to weddings, there are lots of traditions many of couples feel they have to do. I’m here to tell you - you don’t!

Meet Kayla Myers

It all started when a friend asked me if I'd be willing to film her wedding.

I do this for my clients and the people they’ve chosen to share a wedding day with. It’s not often that all the people you love are in the same room and I take that to heart.

My Story

It would be an honor to partner together and capture a beautiful, heartfelt film or photos that honor your most cherished moments. whether that be on your wedding day or with your family.
